If you carry on past the castle at Capdeperera you'll eventually come to the medieval town of Arta. This is where you'll find the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, the towns most popular attraction.
It dates back to the 14th century. Today, it's home to a small effigy of Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus in her lap. This is believed to be one of the oldest figures of worship on the island.
During the 16th century huge walls were added to the sanctuary to defend against pirate attacks. During the 1960's extensive restoration work was carried out. This is mostly what you will see today .
There are 180 steps leading up to the Sanctuary. The journey starts off at the Parish Church of Transfiguració in Arta. It's not recommended for anyone with mobility problems.
The views from the top of the sanctuary are amazing. They're some of the most impressive on the island.
