The castle at Capdepera is one of the largest on the island. It's located on the road towards the village of Arta. You can't miss this spectacular imposing structure. It's massive.

The castle was originally built back in the 13th century. It was up until the 18th century to protect the locals from invasions and pirate attacks.

After the 18th century the local villagers gradually left the security of the city walls and began to set up the community we see today.

He castle then went into decline. It was left neglected for 200 years until it was finally placed in municipal hands in 1983, and restoration commenced.

Today the castle is open to the public and has become one of the most popular attractions in this area. You can walk around the top of its well preserved battlements and see spectacular views.

Inside you'll see the "Casa del Gobernador" and the "Church of San Juan". These are two of the few original buildings that have been preserved inside the castle walls.

Inside the Church of San Juan, there's a huge carving of Christ that dates back to the 14th Century. There's also a Gothic statue of the patron saint of Capdepera (Verge de l'Esperança).

It's open all summer long from 10am to 1pm and later from 4pm to 7pm in the evening.
